I say this from a creative gamer & science-fiction lover's perspective; stack (or even tunnel) some of the buildings & spread them out a bit more in terms of layout. Not only does this help for any large number of citizens but also can be helpful in case of an ALIEN INVASION!

(It is space, after all. Who knows what's out there?)
But then again, considering the scale ratio of the little person, space for population may not be a problem. But still; a bit of diversity in buildings is always nice.

Unless this goes against part of the reasoning as of to why they're like that (I say this because I notice those cylindrical structures on top of most of the buildings, which for all I know may be crucial electric systems too large to be placed anywhere else but the rooftops.)

The lack of variety is sort of intentional. It's supposed to be just a temporary sort of quick set up coloney wiht just a few generic template buildings tha tcan be set up quite quick.

Nope. Gotta remember service personel, engineers, archaeologists, geologists, meteorlogists, all kinda ologists. Security personel. Food techs, water purification team. Power team. All kidns of people go behing making a small city function.
